The Brief

A family of four in Wimbledon called us in after their old system boiler started losing pressure and going off on cold mornings. Hot water was patchy from the airing cupboard cylinder, the household had outgrown the storage capacity, and the boiler itself was past its serviceable life. They wanted heating they could rely on through winter and hot water on demand for two adults and two school-age children getting ready at the same time.

We met them on a Saturday for a free survey, walked through the existing setup, and talked through the trade-offs between repairing the old unit, replacing like-for-like, or moving to a combi. Given the gas supply, the layout of the airing cupboard, and how the family actually used hot water, a Worcester combi made the most sense. They received a written quote within forty-eight hours and we booked the install for a fortnight later.

What We Did

The two-day install covered the full sequence:

  • Stripped out the old system: Drained down the heating circuit, isolated gas and water, and removed the old boiler, hot water cylinder, and redundant feed-and-expansion tank from the loft.
  • Drained and flushed the system: Ran a full power flush across all radiators to clear sludge and debris that had built up over the years, then refilled with fresh inhibitor.
  • Upgraded the gas line where needed: Pulled a new 22mm gas run from the meter to the new boiler position to meet the demand of the combi without pressure drop.
  • Fitted the Worcester combi: Mounted the new unit in the kitchen, made up new copper pipework on flow, return, gas, cold mains, and hot out, and ran a fresh condensate to a suitable termination.
  • Ran a new flue: Installed a horizontal flue with the correct clearances, sealed and weather-finished where it passed through the wall.
  • Fitted a smart thermostat: Wired in a wireless smart room stat so the family can run schedules from their phones and warm the house on the way home.
  • Commissioned and benchmarked: Ran the full commissioning sequence, set combustion to manufacturer spec, completed the benchmark certificate, and registered the manufacturer warranty in the homeowner's name.

The Result

The family went from a tired system that struggled on cold mornings to a combi that delivers hot water the moment a tap turns on, with two showers running in sequence comfortably. Heating warms the house faster, the smart thermostat lets them dial back the temperature when the house is empty, and the airing cupboard is now free space rather than a tangle of pipework and a leaking cylinder.

Running cost has dropped against the old setup thanks to a higher-efficiency unit, full system flush, and tighter controls. The Worcester warranty is registered, the benchmark certificate is in their boiler folder, and the family has a direct number to call if anything ever needs a follow-up visit.

Job Duration: Two working days from first arrival to final handover, with the family back on heating and hot water by the end of day two.
